Through the eyes of Mayor Cox
Swaying gently back and forth on her porch swing, Mayor Cox’s friendly green eyes looked tiered out onto the street. On her lap, curled up in a tight ball rested her old, grey cat Cornflake. Softly, Mayor Cox ran her wrinkled hands over the animal’s fur listening to him purr quietly. The old cat did not seem to notice the ever so slight change in the air. True, the weather was warming up from the rather cold winter that had fallen over District 13. The sun was beating down harder than usual, making it almost unpleasant to stand out in the streets during high noon. But, other things were changing. Mayor Cox could feel it in her bones.
Smiling graciously as her servant refilled her lemon water glass, Mayor Cox sent the young woman away with a slight gesture of her hand and a smile. The mayor of District 13 was always known for her kindness and friendliness when it came to others. The old woman made sure to stock her household servants with people that she knew needed the extra money. But, she wanted to be alone now. She wanted time to think.
Times were changing, ever so slightly, and she feared that the citizens of her district were starting to notice as well.
For the past few months, Mayor Cox noticed a slight faltering in the food supplies coming from The Capitol. Prices on dairy was rising, as was fresh produce. And this past spring, seeds for growing fresh vegetables were almost nonexistent. Medical supplies prices were so high that many of even the more well off citizens of District 13 were having trouble affording them. However, Mayor Cox could always count on the traveling apothecary to keep her district healthy.
But, the changes still worried her.
Leaning her head against her hand as she continued to sway on her porch swing, Mayor Cox let out a heavy sigh. Cornflake shifted his position to glance up at his owner through his dark yellow eyes. Mayor Cox only smiled down at the loving animal. “Don’t worry.” She whispered down at the creature. “Everything will be alright.”
Her only wish was that she could believe those words herself.
