Age: 18
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Dark Brown
Play By: Jasika Nicole
[/center]Brief Physical Description: Beatrice is a tall woman, perhaps not quite done with growing but enough to know that she’ll be comfortably above average height. She’s dark in coloring with a mild, pleasant face, which is unfortunately easy to read. She has a hard time keeping her emotions from showing despite her attempts to learn how to control her expressions. She’s not precisely the most graceful girl, stronger than she is elegant despite her lean build, tending to move rather awkwardly, as somebody who’s not entirely comfortable in her skin. Her hair is her one vanity, wild and curly and generally kept cut short for practicality’s sake, but well cared for even when her fingernails are short and ragged and her palms are calloused.
Brief History: The middle child in a family of four daughters and one son, Beatrice never lacked for companionship growing up. She’s spent her entire life in District Thirteen, born to a family of miners who had been engaged in the district’s trade for generations. It never occurred to her growing up that she might do anything other than follow in their footsteps. Her two older sisters did their best to take care of Bea growing up, when their parents were busy in the mines and too tired to do much upon returning home, but they were raised mostly by their grandmother. Even as a child Beatrice was quiet in contrast to her sisters’ boundless enthusiasm for life, preferring her own company and quiet games to that of other children, and helping her sisters from the time she was a toddler. Her brother Jamie was born when she was two, followed not long after by another sister, Leslie. The oldest girl, Margret, became default caregiver, managing her herd of younger siblings with deft care even at twelve years.
Her family was big and raucous without even factoring in her dozens of cousins and aunts and uncles, for the most part so perhaps it was no wonder that one of the children had to be the quiet one. With loud, enthusiastic siblings with affection for arguing (if lovingly) over every last detail, Bea took it upon herself to get things done. When Margret married a shop owner and Janna flitted off to another district in hopes of finding a ‘more exciting life’ she took over as unofficial Eldest Sibling, protecting the younger two from the growing harshness of the world. Her parents did what they could to provide for their brood but they were well aware that they would never be denizens of the Upper Streets. Eventually, Bea decided it would be most practical for her to join them working in the mines, especially since her brother Jamie was fifteen and capable more-or-less of fending for himself. With the increased interest from Capitol in their district, Bea has grown even more wary, instinctively wanting to shut out the Big Problems but unable to just ignore the certainty that something is coming, and that it could be bad.
Occupation: Mineworker
General Personality: Bea is not a girl of many words and can come across as sharp-tongued. She’s matter-of-fact and practical, preferring to simply get things done rather than spending half the day arguing over how and doesn’t dance around telling the truth. Quietly competent, and often impatient with people who don’t do anything, she doesn’t tend to be comfortable in social situations. Working in the background suits her fine—her ambition is almost non-existent. She’s often the first to volunteer for manual labour, and can’t stay still for long—she gets impatient with fidgety work like sewing. It’s not that she doesn’t like the idea of relaxing, she just finds it dull not to have projects on the go. She keeps her hesitations and uncertainties to herself, figuring that they’re nobody’s business but her own, and an inconvenience in the long run.
Her mind is quick, and while she’s no academic, she’s good at finding solutions to problems and noticing things. Beatrice is not particularly temperamental, more prone to brooding when she’s mad, which occasionally builds to an explosion. She’s independent, hating to be reliant on anyone for anything and wary around people she doesn’t know. Asking for help, even when she most needs it, is something she has serious difficulties with and earning her trust and loyalty requires time. This suspicion can serve her well, in that she’s more of a realist, but it also means she has difficulty establishing relationships. Though she tries to pretend otherwise, she’s got a weakness for taking care of people, fiercely protective especially of her family, and some of her awkwardness eases when she’s working with children.
Strengths: Beatrice is a girl of action rather than thought and standing around making conversation has always seemed like a bit of a waste of time. Her practical nature makes her easy to rely on and one can count on her to get things done, albeit in her own (more efficient) way if necessary. She is capable of taking care of herself and knows how to survive on her own, and operates quite competently without needing direction. However, while she would like to come across as a hard woman, grown up perhaps too quickly, Beatrice has a soft spot for people in trouble and a protective nature. Her instinctive response to somebody in need, on any scale, is to do her best to help them. Ideally without having to be acknowledged. Quick-minded and quiet, Beatrice is capable of seeing a lot and remembering details. Her observant nature lends itself to fact-gathering and she’s pretty good at blending into a crowd.
Weaknesses: Beatrice is reserved, but not for lack of anything to say. She’s shier than she lets on--she doesn’t have an easy time establishing deep connections with people due to her tendencies of keeping to herself and reluctance to open up. She doesn’t deal well with her own emotions, suppressing her reactions when she thinks they’d get in the way. She’s generally rather suspicious; more inclined to think the worst of people or at least requiring time to put her trust in them, and can be the sort of girl to take first impressions extremely seriously, not to mention hold grudges. She has an extremely stubborn nature which translates into a hard time admitting when she’s wrong, and an even harder time admitting when she needs help. Her social experience is limited to her extended family and the people she works with, and neither have really lent themselves to teaching her how to interact comfortably, so she often flounders for things to say or freezes up entirely in conversation. Her cooking is abysmal—it’s probably safer for the entire world that she keeps her
How does your character feel about the announcement from Officer Avenbrook: Beatrice is unsettled by the announcement, not certain that the Powers That Be have their best interests at heart, but trying to go along with life for now.
Possible Future Alliance: Rebellion
Role Playing Sample: Beatrice slouched in her chair, curling her fingers around the hot mug of something steaming and watching her sister surreptitiously. It was cold and wet, sky grey and heavy with rain, and even she would rather have been inside their small home than doing chores. Leslie was technically supposed to be sweeping the floor, but instead she appeared to be spinning in loose circles, holding the broom and humming under her breath. She thought about commenting for a moment, but she knew her sister well enough to be aware that it would be the wrong method to take. Telling her to do something would just make her more determined to do it, and besides, it wasn’t as though she was her taskmaster. If Leslie felt like dancing with brooms, who was Bea to tell her otherwise? It wasn’t as though there weren’t more important things to worry about.
She nursed her drink quietly with this in mind, until Leslie tripped over her feet and went sprawling. “Leslie.” She was on her own feet in an instant, lips quirking as she struggled to suppress a laugh, darting towards her. “What are you doing?”
Guiltily, the younger girl scrambled upright and reached for her broom. “Sweeping. Seriously! I’ll just...er...”
“Hold on.” Beatrice caught her arm and pulled her closer, inspecting her for injury carefully. “You’re alright?”
“I’m fine, Bea.” She giggled nervously and tugged her arm back. “I didn’t hurt myself or anything. It’s just the floor! You’d think I was going unprotected into a battle or something, the way you worry! I’m pretty sure the floor is not going to assault me.”
“I don’t worry,” she snapped back, letting her go abruptly and folding her arms across her chest. She’d found that glaring was a lot more effective when it was backed up by a proper stern stance. Unfortunately, Beatrice’s abilities at looking stern were limited and usually ended up making her look like she was in pain. Her brows furrowed. “It’s sensible, is all.”
Leslie rolled her eyes and twirled away, the hem of her shirt fluttering out. “Mm. Well! I’m a-okay. So! I’ll just get back to work, then.”
Beatrice looked at her for a long, still moment and then sighed, sinking back into her chair. “Probably safer if I do it. Take a break.”
Leslie snatched the broom back with an indignant huff. “No! I said I’d do it, and you already did the dishes. It’s my turn.” Beatrice hesitated before nodding and picked her mug back up. “Well. If you insist.” But she kept a watchful eye on her all the same.
